  • Publication number:
    WO2006098626
  • Description:
The seeds of parasitic plants of the genera Striga and Orobanche will only germinate after induction by a chemical signal exuded from the roots of their host. Many of these compounds have been isolated and identified from a number of different plant species and are collectively called the strigolactones. Here we show that the strigolactone germination stimulants are derived from the carotenoid pathway. The invention relates to the field of plant biotechnology and plant breeding. In particular methods for making plants having enhanced resistance to parasitic weeds are provided. Further provided is a method to use specific herbicides and/or mycorrhiza to control parasitic plants through their effect on the host plant. Also provided are methods for making trap plants and catch plants for parasitic weed control, as well as chimeric genes, overexpression vectors and gene silencing vectors for use in any of these methods. Also, recombinant plants and plant cells, tissues and organs are provided.
