Top quality strategic research is the core business of Plant Research International. But we do produce concrete products as well. Among these are our top quality varieties, in a limited number of crops. In some cases these varieties are the spin off from research projects. Examples of these are the varieties of arable crops.

Because of a lack of private activity in the development of new varieties of fruit crops, the Dutch government gave this task to one of the preceding institutes of Plant Research International. During those days, the government also funded this activity. Recently, the Dutch government has decided to no longer fund this activity. The development of strawberry varieties is now a task of Fresh Forward.

Nowadays Plant Research International is continuing the development of varieties of apple in a breeding programme. This programme is of course supported by a strong research organisation. This improves the quality of the developed varieties and allows the use of modern selection technologies such as marker assisted breeding.

Quality control
New varieties are introduced together with partners in the agrobusiness: auctions, wholesalers, supermarkets and greengrocers. This allows an optimal introduction from which all partners can and will benefit.
Some fruit varieties have to be cultivated and traded in a controlled or so called total quality system. This is in favour of the involved partners since consumers and other end-users will buy a product of which they can be sure of its 'performance'. Fruit grown and traded in this matter may be marketed under special brand names.
