Unifarm

Unifarm is a modern and all-round experimental centre of the Plant Sciences Group of Wageningen UR.

Unifarm assists in setting up and conducting plant and crop experimental research and education.
The wide spectrum of knowlegde and facilities, in combination with an ISO 9001-2000 certification guarantees that experiments are conducted in the best possible way.

Unifarm provides support in areas such as:

  • Advice on cropping and experimental techniques, and on the execution of experiments
  • Crop care: from sowing to harvest
  • Product processing and storage
  • Observations, measurements and sampling
  • Supply of plant material for research and education
  • Organisation of excursions

Unifarm comprises two specialised teams: "Greenhouses and Climate Rooms" and "Field Experiments".

Greenhouses and Climate Rooms
The team Greenhouses and Climate Rooms manages a total of 20 000 m2 greenhouse compartments in Wageningen of different size, construction and technical facilities. There are compartments with soil, substrate gutters and growing tables. Totally closed and fully conditioned compartments are available for research with plant pathogens or genetically modified organisms.

Accurate control of lighting, temperature, day length, screening, relative air humidity and CO2 enrichment is possible. In addition, there are freezing cells, climate cells/rooms and processing rooms.

Field Experiments
gewassentuinThe Field Experiments team manages 250 ha experimental sites (clay soil, peat soil and sandy soil) located in and around wageningen; 50 ha is under organic management. These experimental sites can be used for field production of vegetables, arable farming and grassland. Most fields can be irrigated.

Unifarm has available the specific equipment required for conducting field experiments. Conditioned rooms and sample preparation laboratories are available for product storage and processing. Unifarm also keeps collections of grasses, weeds and crops for research and educational purposes, and is in charge of a plant disease garden.

Droevendaal
Organic Experimental and Training Farm Droevendaal is part of Unifarm.
