Protein-based therapeutics, often referred to as Biopharmaceuticals, are emerging as the largest class of new entities being developed by the pharmaceutical industry. These products need to be produced via cells or organisms using recombinant-DNA technology and the need for recombinant production capacity is growing strongly. Plants are an attractive platform for the production of Biopharmaceuticals since they offer Bio-Safety, lower Cost of Goods and Flexibility/Scalability.

Our research group is an established player in this field and we have focused our efforts on improving the quality of the plant derived proteins. We established insight in and control over glycosylation, sub-cellular targeting and plant physiology and through this much extended the range of proteins and peptides for successful production in plants. Antibodies and mucosal vaccines are some of the proteins we work on.
