This research programme of Plant Research International (PRI) focuses on two important diseases in wheat and banana, two crops affected by fungi from the Mycosphaerella genus. Mycosphaerella graminicola causes the main wheat disease in North West Europe: septoria tritici blotch. Mycosphaerella fijiensis causes “black leaf streak disease” or “Black Sigatoka” in banana. This banana disease is an uncontrollable problem worldwide despite the large-scale use of chemical plant protection products.

In this research we focus on the interaction between plant and pathogen; the wheat programme is the model and the banana program the application.
