Food security in developing countries

Global demand for food continues to rise steeply as a result of the continued population growth and increasing welfare. However, at present there are still almost a billion people in the world who are undernourished. Sustainable use of our natural resources to provide the world population with its primary needs requires that we use our natural resources as efficiently as possible. This requires not only knowledge and understanding of agro-ecological processes, but also of technological solutions.
We contribute to solving these problems with research on efficient use of natural resources, such as rice cultivation that requires less water, in this case in collaboration with research institutes in Asia. We are also engaged in calculating the optimal combinations of natural resource use in sub-Saharan Africa. We contribute to the development of strategic documents, such as the role of science and technology in agrarian development in sub-Saharan Africa. We are also actively involved in promoting international debate on how to achieve goals related to food production and maintaining biodiversity.
