Transition to sustainable farming
In the transition to more sustainable forms of agriculture a number of processes come to the fore: regionalisation in the face of internationalisation and more intensive land use in contrast to extensive land use.
For agricultural production to be sustainable the emissions to the environment must be reduced to ecologically acceptable levels. At global level this means minimising losses and use of natural resources per unit of output; at regional level minimising the losses per unit of area may also be important. We have the knowledge and experience to develop and apply strategies using a systems approach in order to enhance the sustainability of regional and global agricultural systems.
